Review your background and history to identify points that convey best fit for field/profession.

Research (reading/resources): code of ethics, publications by regulation bodies, legislation, books/sites related to profession

Experiences (paid/volunteer/shadowing)

Strengths: in relation to the field/profession (fit)

Step 2: Ideas for review:

  • Talk to friends/colleagues
  • Self-reflect
  • Review application materials (e.g., personal statement/sketch/résumé)
  • Review frameworks for field (e.g., CanMEDS, Ontario Association for Optometrists)
  • Complete the “Self assessment” module to get a list of personal attributes, skills, values, and interests
  • Make notes as you learn more; use post-it notes or index cards and put on a wall to identify patterns
