Notice: Work on a new CareerHub site is underway and will be in-progress over the next year. During this time, the platform will have limited functionality.
Users will be unable to save results from activities, and some of the downloadable content (e.g., PDFs) may no longer be available.
As we’ve noted, skills come from a variety of sources. Your degree program, through the courses you take, provides a rich source of skills that will aid you in determining a career direction as well as specific jobs that are most appropriate for you.
To mine your courses for these skills requires you to reflect on the assignments and projects completed and concepts you have learned. You may have acquired or used these skills through working on group projects, conducting experiments in the lab, or writing research reports. Use course syllabi to jog your memory, if needed.
Let’s take an example:
Activity: Writing a research paper
Skills:
Researching facts/opinions and differentiating between these
Analyzing/evaluating information/data from various sources
Synthesizing/interpreting information gathered
Analyzing/identifying issues and problems
Writing to convey findings effectively
Planning/organizing/prioritizing tasks
Persuading others with your ideas/arguments
Meeting a deadline
And, if you have to present your findings:
Oral communication/presentation skills
Pretty impressive, right?
Now, compare these skills to the lists of employability skills presented previously - the skills employers are looking for. You will note: many are the same! And the remaining ones are also important currency in the job market.
In the next section. We’ll look at more examples, by Faculty, and give you the opportunity to analyze activities common to your Faculty and mine them for the skills you are developing.
Mining the skills from my degree
In this section you will find some examples of assignments from your Faculty, along with the employability skills you are developing in completing these assignments. These are obviously only a small representation of the assignments that are part of your chosen program. But they are enough to give you a solid idea of the valuable skills you are developing that will connect you to the world of work.
You are encouraged to continue this exercise of extracting skills from course work as it applies to your own specific assignments and projects. These skills will lay the foundation for
résumé bullet points,
interview question responses and
other communications encountered in your job search.
If you have not yet decided upon a particular career path, this information will also prove to be valuable as you compare the skill components of occupational options.
A reminder: your degree and program can lead to many career and job possibilities. You are not confined to a ‘typical’ linear career path from a degree title. Think outside the box.
