Early planning is important for a successful application to graduate school. Before arranging the tasks, please read the relevant pages in the What you need to know subsection, and the Master’s and PhD programs page to answer many of your questions.
Graduate School:
Cultivating relationships with professors for references takes time – speak up in class, attend office hours, and/or volunteer to help with research well in advance of your application year
Pay specific attention to when you plan to research schools and contact potential supervisors. You will need to do this in advance
Balance your work, volunteer, research, and extracurricular activities with maintaining your grades; but don’t leave getting experience until your last year. All experience will help you determine research interests, career decisions, and solidify a strong application – start early
Scholarship applications are due before your actual program application. Start early as you will most likely need to write a proposal and have references for the scholarship application in addition to all of the program applications you are preparing
A Career Development appointment will help you determine your values, skills, interests, and personality in order to make decisions about your career direction and program choice – the earlier you start learning about yourself, the earlier you will feel prepared to make decisions or determine back-up plans
Individual applications, co-op streams, and circumstances can differ, so adjust your timeline accordingly and/or meet with a Further Education Career Advisor to discuss alterations to your timeline
